uMlazi is the second biggest township in South Africa today. It is situated in the South of Durban in the Ethekwini municipality. The area got its name from the uMlazi river which has been called by the name even before the era of King Shaka of the Zulu nation. The arrival of settler Colonial forces on the East Coast of Africa was accompanied by massive dispossession of established African communities in the area now called Natal. The research we did during the Durban Sings project uncovered some oral testimonies from residents who explain the forceful removal and murder of the Cele clan during 1714 from the area of Umlazi to make way for the establish colonial controlled buntu settlements. This is part of the Raw Footage compiled by Malungisa in Mzinyathi a village in the North of Durban. Incudes mainly collected interwviews following standard D/S questionnaire format i.e. biography, family tree, and memories about area, what has changed? What would you change? Dreams for future of area/self, popular saying/proverb, favorite song and any other comments (see D/s questionnaire on www.durbansings.wordpress.com )⦠Mix languages mainly isiZulu and some English.
